Of the numerous hotels in Jersey City near the Hudson River, we recommend beginning your search with just two: Courtyard and Candlewood Suites. On weekends, rates are comparable at both hotels, but on weeknights you’ll pay about $100 per night more to stay at the Courtyard. Both hotels offer free wireless internet in all rooms. Breakfast and parking are available at both hotels for a fee. But all the rooms at the Candlewood Suites have full kitchens so you could also cook your own breakfast. While you can’t go wrong with either hotel choice, we prefer the Candlewood Suites because the nightly rates are better and all the rooms are suites.

Neighborhood Vibe: Jersey City is quickly becoming one of the most popular areas for people who work in Manhattan but want or need to live outside the city. The heavy commuter traffic means that many of the best things to do in Jersey City are centered around the PATH stations. The Exchange Place PATH station is on the Hudson River where there’s a waterfront walkway and a park, restaurants and museums are just a few blocks away.
Getting Around: From most areas of Jersey City, you can be in Manhattan in under 20 minutes via the PATH. From Exchange Place to the World Trade Center, it takes just six minutes. From the World Trade Center, it’s easy to connect to the Subway to reach other areas of New York City.
What to Eat: Historic downtown Jersey City has some fun eateries like Cafe Batata for Brazilian brunch fare and Pasta dal Cuore for Italian food. If you’re looking for something to go, food trucks often set up shop near the many PATH stations, Mordi’s Schnitzel Truck is particularly popular. Beer-loving history buffs enjoy visiting the Light Horse Tavern, which opened in the 1850s.
Things to Do: Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty sit between Jersey City and Manhattan and are the top attractions; cruises to these sights depart from Liberty State Park. Kids (and kids at heart) enjoy the Liberty Science Center.
